Poor quality photos with P20 Lite

I'm new to Huawei phones having had an iPhone for years and feeling a bit confused! Ive just bought the p20 lite and was looking forward to using the camera as I'd heard good things. I know it's not as good as the p20 or pro so wasn't expecting that quality but the quality I'm ending up with is pretty dreadful. Even in good light pictures are always grainy and fuzzy looking. When you zoom in the detail is really poor. What am I doing wrong?

Hi Pam,

If your intending on taking pictures and zooming in to perhaps crop its best to make sure your phone is set to take the biggest picture size (MP).

To do this - when taking a picture go into settings - and select picture size/quality and ensure the highest MP is selected should be 16MP for the P20 Lite

Yeah it's already set at 16MP but, even without zooming in, the picture just doesn't look as clear or detailed as what I was able to take with the iPhone. 😩

No, I thought that too but there's nothing.

@Pamcakes

Thank you for sharing this experience!

In response to your question, the P20 Lite uses exclusively a digital zoom so, upon processing, picture quality may drop a little. What you can try in this case is taking the picture without zooming, and then "zooming" in post-processing by cropping the picture.

I could be wrong but I think that's what Pamcakes is already doing, I don't think she's referring to zooming before taking the photo.

Have you had any success in solving the poor quality pictures on your P20 LIte?

Looking forward to your reply!

Max
I've got the same problem with new P20 Lite. Camera pictures are grainy even with decent lightning where e.g older samsung J5 and iphone6 from 4 years back does give better quality. I was expecting lot better than that. Any movement in the scene will get image unusable, which would mean that I can take pictures only with tripod on the P20 lite.

No zooming involved and also been trying with all settings - no changes to get grainy pictures clearer :(

I hope this is software issue and is being resolved? Is there a possibly software update that would fix image prosessing for P20 lite?

Thank you for help!

Having the same issue always had iPhone heard the p20lite was good so took a chance. My photos are awful in comparison to iPhone and I really don't want to have to change back but no matter how I take them they look like it's taken from a phone that's ten years old. Will this get better with software or is this how it is with this phone?

Sorry to see that you are also having these issues! 😞

At the moment there isn't a fix for this. As @Max mentioned in this topic: the feedback is forwarded to our developers. They will fix this in a future update. Sorry for the inconvenience!
Same problem here. Insane poor quality photos grainy and fuzzy as mentioned earlier. Had Samsung a7 2016 and a5 2016 before. Pictures are not comparable. Had same problem with Huawei device in the past it was p8 lite. Pictures was as bad as p20 lite which I own now. Just disappointed with this brand now...

I have my phone for 9mths and initially the photos were great but recently they are very grainy. I haven't changed any settings. I use it for basic use really. It must be a recent software update so any guidance on a future fix???

Not sure but this MIGHT.... solve your problem.
By any chance are you taking pictures in RAW mode ?

RAW is basically taking a picture in the max resolution and then no processing by the phone after the shot. So they do look blurry and not sharp. The photo is RAW it's waiting to be edited by a third party app like Lightroom or Snapseed to sharpen and process the image.

If you have RAW set to ON then turn it off and try again.

Let us know if this works
Thanks for the suggestion rockinross. I've checked and RAW is not on so not the solution for me this time!

Was worth a try. Sorry can't be more helpful.

Out of interest, does using a different camera app yield similar results ? Open Camera for instance ?
Yes worth a try - thanks. I'm not well versed in using other apps for taking photos (sorry!) so have nothing of that kind installed.
Hello, I have the same problem with my Huawei mate 20, selfies are grainy when taking pictures and the result are blurry pictures, it is the same with the rear camera. My previous phone (Samsung a5 2015) doesn't have this problem the pictures are better than this phone. I feel like a bought a cheap phone. Is it the settings?
