Mate 20 Pro and Google Pay

I'm struggling to get Google Pay to work, the first few times I tried, the terminal told me to either use chip or another card. The store and terminal do support Google Pay. Then I tried to switch to a new SIM card, and now nothing happens at all (though I'm not sure if this is what caused it). The Google Pay support articles state that in this case you need to check if the app is set as default app for NFC payments, but there is no such setting that I can find on the phone.

I've contacted my bank as well and they assured me that my card and the store is supposed to be supported and we failed to find any solution.

Can anyone here help me with this?

EDIT:

I found the setting to select Google Pay as default app. It was under the NFC settings, it's for some reason not visible when going to apps>default app. Need to check again now and see if it works now.

Might be too obvious but just checking you have Google Pay as default in the NFC settings.

Userlevel 4
Yes, I just discovered where to apply this setting myself, haha! But thanks 🙂 Hopefully this does it.

I tried again now, but nothing, no reaction. I was hoping that now it would, if nothing else, revert back to the problem I had the first few times I tried when it at least reacted when I tried.

Am I correct in assuming that others are able to make this work with this phone?

Hi @bjorsim, it's working for me with no issues. Have you taken a look at your Google account settings? Go into Google account, then payments and subscriptions, then manage payment methods. Are your preferred cards set up in there? If not, come back to me. I'll try and help as much as I can.

Hi 🙂 thanks. Yes, they are. Everything is set up correctly as far as I can tell.

Okay. In Apps, do your Google Play Services settings look like this?

Userlevel 4
Yes 🙂 Same version as well.

Okay, next! 😂

Settings, battery, then app launch. I have Google Play Services on manage manually.

Userlevel 4
Yes, I have the same setting, manage manually with everything on. I've had to do this previously in order to get email and messaging apps to work correctly. I've also set the "special access" setting to "do not allow".

Just want to say I really appreciate the effort! Don't give up on me 🙂

Happy to keep trying but may need to get further assistance as I'm at a bit of a loss.

I have heard of sim cards sometimes being an issue. Could try to remove and reinsert (or go back to your previous one now settings are sorted).

Otherwise wipe cache for Google Play Services App, delete it and reinstall? Last option is factory reset of phone but I can see why you might want to avoid this.

I'll also see if anyone else can help.
Userlevel 4
Yeah, I can understand. I'm at a loss myself. I've actually acquired a brand new sim and tried that as well, without luck. I've verified with my bank that my card is supposed to work. The only thing I haven't tried which I've read, is to try Google Services Beta, wasn't sure if I wanted that, but maybe I'll give it a go.

Hang in there. I've asked if anyone else can offer any further advice.
Userlevel 4
I've deleted the cache for google services and restored the original version, but I'm not sure how to update it. Play store says everything is updated. Might just take a while?

Edit:
There's a lot of third party apps for updating google services, but not sure if I want to trust or use them. Should be a more "official" way of doing it.

Edit2:
Okay, updated 🙂

Oddly enough, I've just put my phone on to charge and received an update for Google Pay too. Fingers crossed for you 🤞
Userlevel 4
Yeah, I actually got that update earlier today. Could have mentioned that, but it didn't change anything for me. I think I'll go out and try again now that I've reset play services. I actually had to re-confirm my card and enable contactless payments, so maybe that'll do it. Fingers crossed!

Unfortunately no change 😞 No reaction at all. Very strange.

Aw naw :(

Your local store must be bemused too. I've just been out and used mine a couple of times (I have my Mondo set up as default). Depending on the terminal, I either just have to tap and it automatically pays OR I get no reaction until I locate and press the fingerprint scanner from the lock screen, when the phone wakes and payment goes through. The latter takes a bit of getting used to.

Unfortunately, I can't think of anything else. You may have to try the Live Chat or Hotline through the HiCare app. Please keep us updated on how you get on and, in the meantime, hopefully someone will offer more suggestions here. So sorry I couldn't help more.

Hi bjorsim,

Regarding your inquiry, can you please send me a private message with the IMEI and current build number of your phone? You can find both of them in Settings > System > About phone. Please do not post either number on this discussion.

To send a private message, simply click on my name in the discussion post. In the new menu that appears, select "Send message".

Looking forward to your reply!

Yes, haha 🙂 They've started to notice and now they offered to help, but I told them there's probably little they can do that I haven't tried.

I've contacted Google support though, and the support guy have escalated the case to a specialist which will contact me within 48 hours.

I'm wondering if it's possible that one of my other apps might be interfering. As I've mentioned, the first few times I at least got a reaction from the terminal even if it didn't work, but since then I've installed an identification app called "BankID" that's used for payments and secure logins. It's after that, that I had to change the default payment app back to Google Pay (the default payment app was then set to SIM card).

Still, it should work, so if this is the cause then it's probably a bug somewhere. I think the next step for me until someone either here or from Google has some more help to offer, is to try to remove this "BankID" app and the accompanying app for my bank. But I kind of need BankID, so if this is the cause, then I'll have to think about what I need the most and Google Pay might have to yield in that case.

Hi @Max 🙂 Thanks for contacting me. I'll do that now.

Hopefully between Google support and @Max and the Huawei support team, you'll get a fix. Lykke til! 😉
Userlevel 4
Well I tried to uninstall this BankID app today, but still no reaction from the terminal. Still awaiting response from Max though.

It's been two days and still no response from either Google or Max. I'm getting paranoid. Was it something I said?

Ha, certainly not. You've been terribly polite and very patient.

I'm sure @Max will be looking into this. Hopefully Google will come back too. I'm sure it must be really frustrating.

You could always use it as an excuse for not buying any Christmas gifts 😬
